Lightbulb Choosing which Directories to Submit to

Directories have been good sources of one-way links for a long time. It is a one of the easiest link building method especially for newer sites. But quality is still the name of the game. Some pointers in selecting the directories to submit to:

High PR - indication that Google sees some value in the directory.
Well maintained - listed sites are in the proper category
High Traffic - getting traffic could be minimal from directories, but majority are targeted
Kewords ranking high in SERP - Well optimized, shows that the directory is well-marketed and SEO'ed.

Which to avoid:
Link farms that pose as directories
Directories that require reciprocal links
Crappy ones with crappy sites listed

What are your thoughts? Care to add more pointers?

High PR is a good indication that the directory is well maintained. Its also a good sign that the directory will stay active for a long, long time. Its really a very good investment :D

Hi,

It would be better if we find niche directories. gone are the days when you make a website and hire somebody to submit your website to thousands of Directories.

Good tips for beginners. According to me reciprocal directory submission is also the way for getting quality backlinks.

Yes, good points. However you should be careful when it comes to page rank. High PR doesn't necessarily mean that directory is good and established and built up over time. Can mean that the webmaster just bought a high PR domain at auction and pointed it at his directory. It's quite a common practice, I have heard.
